die operation - und so werden kriege heute ja genannt - soll im oktober beginnen, wenn der monsunregen endet, die fluesse weniger reißend und das terrain besser zugaenglich sind. die bewohner der waelder, darunter die maoisten, die sich als im krieg gegen den staat indien begreifen, sind stammesvoelker, die aermsten der armen im land. sie leben dort seit jahrhunderten, ohne schulen, krankenhaeuser, straßen, fließendes wasser. sie leben, und das ist ihr ebenso so altes ‚vergehen’, auf land, das reich an eisenerz, bauxit, uran und zinn ist. diese rohstoffe sind es, an denen die großen bergbauunternehmen tata, vedanta, essar, sterlite und andere, hochinteressiert sind. die regierung stehe, so der premierminister in einer erklaerung, in der pflicht, den mineralienreichtum indiens auszubeuten, um die boomende wirtschaft anzukurbeln. die maoisten nennt er die ‘groesste interne sicherheitsbedrohung indiens’. ‚ausrotten’ und ‚vernichten’ sind die begriffe, mit denen die wirtschaft in diesem zusammenhang operiert. wie die sicherheitskraefte in den waeldern zwischen maoisten, sympathisanten und unbeteiligten unterscheiden sollen, weiß jedoch niemand. //the operation —which incidentally, is what wars are called these days—is scheduled to begin in october, when the monsoon rains come to an end and the rivers are less angry and the terrain more accessible. the people who live in these forests, including the maoists who see themselves as waging war against the indian state, are tribal people, the poorest people in the country. they have lived on these lands for centuries with no schools, no hospitals, no roads, no running water. their crime is an old one —they live on the land that is rich with iron-ore, bauxite, uranium and tin, all of it desperately desired by major mining corporations, among them tata, vedanta, essar and sterlite. the prime minister has declared that his government is duty bound to exploit india’s mineral wealth to fuel india’s economic boom.
he has called the maoists the ‘single largest internal security threat to india.’ in the corporate press words like ‘stamp-out’ and ‘exterminate’ are commonly used in discussions about what ought to be done to them. when the security forces enter the forests, nobody knows how they are going to distinguish between maoists, maoist symapthizers and ordinary people.
